Is decorating a cookie so that it looks like a cookie meta? I’m not sure if it’s meta, but it’s definitely fun! And best of all, it’s ridiculously easy. I had so much fun making an order for a local client that I had to make more and write a post about it so that you could do it too. So let’s roll up our sleeves and get decorating!
For the Chocolate Chip Cookies:
The first thing you’ll need is a great sugar cookie recipe! The one I’ve written up has never failed me and I highly recommend it. Cut your cookie shape with a round cookie cutter in the size you prefer- I used a 2″ cutter in this tutorial. Next, you’ll want to make a batch of light brown royal icing with the recipe linked here. Mix it with enough water for a consistency that is spreadable but firm enough to hold its new shape when you are done pushing it around on the cookie. Finally, you’ll need some mini chocolate chips for garnish!
Start by scooping your brown royal icing into a piping bag with a large open tip. Squeeze out enough icing to cover the surface of the cookie, but it doesn’t have to be pretty because you’re going to be swirling it around anyway. Using a small spoon (I used a baby food spoon) smooth the icing in a way that it will resemble chocolate chip cookie dough. You’ll want some subtle peaks and valleys for dimension.
Once you’re happy with the shape, sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top of the cookie. Press each lightly into the icing so that the chocolate will stick to the cookie after the icing dries. Repeat the process until all your round cookies are covered.
For the Milk Bottles:
The milk bottles were a little trickier simply because I didn’t have a milk bottle cookie cutter in my hoard of cookie tools. If you don’t have one either, don’t despair! I made my own by cutting a rectangle sugar cookie, turning it on it’s short side, and then taking ‘bites’ out of the top with a rounded edge. It worked very well for me- so if you don’t feel like buying yet another cookie cutter, try this easy hack first!
Mix up a batch of white royal icing, and separate it out into outline and flooding consistency. Pipe your milk bottle shape onto the cookie and flood it. Once it’s dry, you can pipe any color label and cap on it that you choose- we did purple because the milk jugs in our house have purple caps and stickers.
We also did some ‘cow spots’ on the label, and a simple vertical line pattern on the cap.
That’s all there is to it! Now you just have to lean back and let your friends be impressed! Let me know how it worked out for you in the comments!
